Paper is my medium and beauty my goal,
Guide the folds, and the art you’ll behold.
In the past, I saw a piece of paper as just a piece of paper: a pallet for writing, or more often a crumpled basketball to shoot into the trashcan. In elementary, I folded a simple sailboat, hat, and “banger,” but it was only child’s play.
So how did I get into origami? Up to this point, I had been blessed to excel in most things I put my mind to. But within my first year of college, my life melted before my eyes. Chronic pain took me out of college and many other areas of my life. Amidst trying to rebuild my life with heavy limitations, I started looking for a new hobby. After reading an amazing article by Robert Lang, I began folding paper. When I wasn’t feeling well, I could still fold. It required a great amount of mental concentration at times, but when I was in pain, I could stick to elementary folds that could lead to a great final outcome. Ex. Modular Swan Lovers.
I relate to the song by Superchick “Beauty from Pain.” From my pain came this beautiful art. I hope it can add a little beauty to your world.
